3) Locate the CD-ROM drive controller by doing one of the following:
a) For external CD-ROM drives, the data cable will be connected to an adapter on the back of the computer. The adapter will be either directly located on an expansion card or the adapter will have a ribbon cable that extends to a controller on the motherboard.
NOTE: The CD-ROM drive controller can be a separate expansion card or the controller can be built onto a another card (such as, sound card with CD-ROM drive port).
b) For internal CD-ROM drives, trace the data cable (40 or 50-pin ribbon cable) from the back of the drive unit to an adapter located on an expansion card or on the motherboard.
